10 Steps to Asphalt Shingle Recycling
-
Attend a Roofs 2 Roads training class. We have trainings scheduled
regularly. We can also schedule a training for you and your company
at your convenience.
-
Complete the questionnaire concerning your current disposal practices.
-
Your company name will now be listed on our website, and provided to
the managers of collection points.
-
Each project you recycle has to be tested for asbestos by using the
process outlined below.
-
When you get a contract for a roofing tear-off, take asbestos
samples. 3 samples are required for each roof layer. The samples can
be small, about the size of a quarter.
-
Complete the asbestos testing
form and send it to the testing lab via FedEx:
URS Corporation
5 Industrial Way,
Salem, NH 03079
Roofs to Roads is covering the shipping costs. Here is an example form.
-
You and Roofs to Roads will receive your report within 24 hours via
e-mail. Please print out a copy of your test results to give to the
gatekeeper at the collection point.
-
If the shingles contain asbestos over 1%, Roofs to Roads
will not be able to accept the shingles and they will have
to be taken to an approved Asbestos Landfill.
-
Tear off the roof. Keep asphalt shingles in one receptacle and all
other trash and recyclables in another receptacle. Add shingle
waste from the new roof to the asphalt shingle receptacle.
-
Recycle your shingles! Proceed to the most convenient collection
point.
-
If you will be going to Brannan Sand and Gravel you must
have a copy of the asbestos report for the load you are
tipping to give to the gate keeper. You also must purchase a
"Pit Pass" from Brannan directly before you proceed to the
collection location.
-
The Collection Location can refuse loads that are not clean.
You can bring these to a landfill.
-
Enjoy the greenhouse gas reduction, the reduced disposal fees, and
the green marketing benefits!

What are the benefits of recycling shingles?
Recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) can replace a significant percentage of
asphalt-cement virgin binder asphalt used for paving roads. In 2009,
paving projects completed with RAS are using a 5% mix. Positive impacts
include:
-
Every ton of virgin binder replaced with RAS avoids 27 tons of
C02 emissions.
-
The project will divert 5,000 tons of shingles from landfills in
2009.
-
Market analysis in Missouri and other states shows the potential
savings of over $1,500 per mile of road, for each inch of paving
depth, by using RAS.
-
Data coming in from Missouri and Minnesota show several years of
high performance for roads with RAS content.
-
This project is be monitored by the Colorado Department of
Transportation, (CDOT).
-
The success of the Roofs to Roads project will put Colorado in
a leadership position for reducing green house gases and
innovative use of RAS.
